I’ve watched too many could-be guitarists fail to reach their full potential because they focussed on slick solos and fancy schmancy tricks. That’s not what great music is about.
Guitar playing is not about gimmicks. Nobody wants to hear another guitarist attempting AC/DC riffs and Jimi Hendrix solos. It has to be enjoyable to listen to, it’s gotta be fun to share.
Over 25 years of guitar teaching, I’ve found there are three secrets to learning to play guitar well – focus on fun, forget about boring scales/ theory you’ll hardly use, and develop underrated + powerful skills of musicality, vocals and ear training.
